Critical Incident Stress Management
Critical Incident Stress Management, or CISM, is NOT therapy or counseling. CISM services are not a replacement for actual professional counseling – and being a licensed counselor alone does not equate to being training in CISM. The goals may be similar, but the process and techniques are vastly different than those used in traditional counseling and “talk-therapies”.
CISM specialists provide immediate, incident specific, supportive crisis intervention following exposure to a traumatic event such as death of a child, violence in the workplace, line of duty death, natural or other disasters. The focus of the process is to minimize the harmful effect of traumatic stress, and accelerate the recovery of those who have been traumatized in these situations.
Specific physical, psychological and emotional reactions, as well as the increased stress and concerns of family/loved ones are all natural responses to exposure to a traumatic event. Understanding that your responses are not uncommon may help lessen the level of anxiety, the severity of reactions, and the burden of concerns that you, your family, and/or co-workers are experiencing.
